Simon Gikandi is affiliated with the Departments of Comparative Literature and African American Studies, and the Program in African Studies. His current research projects are on slavery and modernity, African philology, and cultures of the novel.
As an Old Dominion Research Professor, Gikandi plans to spend the year completing his new book, The Atlantic Crypt: Slavery and the Cultures of Modernity. Based on archival work conducted in West Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe in the last ten years, the book is an attempt to account for the African’s troubled entry into modernity through enslavement and its instruments of control.
