Translation for Monolinguals
Program in Translation and Intercultural Communication, Jan Steyn 144 Louis A. Simpson Building
December 10, 2018 · 12:00 pm—1:30 pm · 144 Louis A. Simpson Building
This talk reflects on conundrums often faced by translators, teachers of translation, reviewers of works in translation, authors writing original works in a translation-impacted world, and even, occasionally, Hollywood filmmakers: How to talk about translation to people who only speak one language? What are the appropriate metaphors, intra-lingual exercises, narrative strategies, or visualizations for the commerce between languages? And (how) can such attempts to talk about translation challenge the presumptive category of monolingualism itself?
