Translating Contemporary Korean Literature: “High-context” to “Low-context” Translation

Different languages allow for different levels of ambiguity. Korean oftentimes requires readers to extrapolate information in order to understand intended meaning. English permits less ambiguity, and translators must consider this disparity between the two languages when clarifying potential points of confusion for English readers. This talk examines several passages from the translation of Yun Ko Eun’s Table for One.
