In medieval and early modern Europe, the practice of alchemy promised extraordinary physical transformations. Base metals turned into silver and gold? Hard iron into soft water? Deadly poison into elixirs that could heal the human body? Join PUL and author Jennifer Rampling, whose book, “The Experimental Fire,” traces the development of alchemy in England over 400 years and bridges the intellectual history of chemistry and the wider worlds of early modern patronage, medicine, and science. Rampling is also the curator of the “Through a Glass Darkly: Alchemy and the Ripley Scrolls 1400-1700” exhibition in the Milberg Gallery at Firestone Library.

The event will take place on Zoom webinar. Registration is required.
