Public Humanities Working Group: The Public Humanities at Princeton

The second and final session in the Spring 2020 Public Humanities Working Group series. Join us for monthly conversations with faculty, graduate students, and staff from across the university to think together about our shared humanistic work and its larger, public implications outside of university life, and to consider more largely the value and relevance of the humanities in our present moment.

Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch to this virtual meeting. This session will showcase digital projects produced by members of the Princeton community that explore African American history in Princeton and beyond.

To spark and ground our discussion, we’ll discuss two specific examples of public humanities projects: Professor Martha Sandweiss (Professor of History, Princeton) will speak about her experience directing the Princeton & Slavery Project. In addition, Postdoctoral Research Associate Jim Casey (Perkins Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Digital Humanities, Princeton) and graduate students Julia Grummitt and Elena M’Bouroukounda will discuss their recent event Douglass Day. We’ll talk with these scholars about their specific projects as prompts to think more widely about the possibilities and challenges of doing work in the public humanities.
