A Musicology Colloquium Talk by Martin Stokes (King’s College London)

Recent interest in music as ‘atmosphere’ (Reidel and Torvinen 2019) raises the question of water, and its powers of sounding and silencing. Along the Euphrates one might trace this matter from the orientalist debates about hydraulic civilisations to the waterboarding of detainees during the American and British occupation of Iraq. The talk considers water governmentality and the shaping of (memories of) a riverine musical culture, drawing on current fieldwork in southeastern Anatolia.
