Generative AI systems such as ChatGPT have taken the world by storm. They show many impressive abilities that would require intelligence if done by humans. But is ChatGPT really intelligent? Can it understand what it says? Is it conscious? Can it think? According to philosopher and cognitive scientist David Chalmers (N.Y.U.) these difficult questions require philosophical analysis. Chalmers will present the Department of Philosophy’s Annual Undergraduate Lecture “Can ChatGPT think?” on Wednesday, April 10, 4:30pm – 6:00pm in Friend Center room 101.
