Borderlens
Queer Outlines of Geography and Gender

Zaporizhzhia (2024), dir. Yulia Appen

Yet to be completed, Zaporizhzhia is a documentary that follows the stories of Roma women displaced in Zaporizhzhia by the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Through mesmerizing frames and nuanced sets of anthropological questions, the film takes us into the complex enmeshment of narratives of gender identity, nationality, and displacement that Roma women are bringing to life in today’s Zaporizhzhia.
Yulia Appen is a young Ukrainian film director collaborating with Freefilmers, a cinemovement and NGO in Mariupol. Her work on the film goes parallel with the volunteering activities taking place in Zaporizhzhia in support of refugees and displaced people.
