2018 marked the seventieth anniversary of two momentous events in twentieth-century history: the birth of the State of Israel and the creation of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Both remain tied together in the ongoing debates about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, global antisemitism, and U.S. foreign policy. Yet the surprisingly deep connections between Zionism and the modern human rights movement remain completely unknown today. Drawing on his recent book, James Loeffler will explore the forgotten Jewish political past of human rights and its relevance to contemporary debates about the future of global justice.
