How can storytelling help us mend the social and material fissures that governmental policies often create between individual and collective care? Community integration is central to mental and physical wellbeing, but the healthcare needs of individuals frequently clash with policies crafted for the collective.
On Thursday, April 13 at 12:30pm ET, Art Hx: Visual and Medical Legacies of British Colonialism presents “Collectives in Crisis: Healing through Storytelling” with guest speaker Dr. Neil P. Bardhan. As the Director of Applied Storytelling at First Person Arts in Philadelphia, Bardhan addresses the role personal narratives can play in behavioral health, community building, and human connection. During this conversation with Art Hx team members Nancy Ai and Dennis Schaefer, Bardhan will also consider how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the polarizing political climate in the United States call us to acknowledge a moment of collective crisis, and the group will discuss storytelling as an important tool in science communication and solidarity building.
