Arriving in the Present: A Critical Lexicon for Multilingualism and (Post-)Migration in Contemporary German Studies
May 2, 2024—May 4, 2024 ·
German Department; Humanities Council
This conference brings our attention to two growing fields in German Studies — multilingualism and the transnational literature of (post-)migration. Invited experts in both of these fields as well as artists and authors will reflect both on concepts that have been deemed destructive because they carry a systemic function for subjugation, as well as on those that are productive — i.e., that might introduce a new language for an as-of-yet unnamed experience, that have been missed in the general clamor, that have been hijacked or hallucinated, or that are lurking in invective and satire. Sessions in a variety of formats reflect and reinforce the intellectual diversity to which we aspire: alongside traditional keynotes and panels, there are artist talks, readings, and roundtables. It is our hope that this conversation will contribute to the serious engagement with transnational/(post-)migration literature and the arts in German at Princeton and beyond.
