Divya Cherian (History) was awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The new awards fund “advanced research and writing projects by humanities scholars on a wide range of subjects,” according to the NEH announcement.
The fellowship will support Cherian’s latest book project, “Conjured States: Witchcraft and Politics in Western India, 1750-1900.” The book will explore the belief in witches and the history of their persecution in South Asia from the late colonial period to the end of the 19th century.
Cherian is an associate professor in the Department of History. Her research focuses on western India, chiefly on the region that is today Rajasthan. She is a member of the Humanities Council’s Behrman Faculty Fellows, a program designed to recognize exceptional humanists as they enter the ranks of the senior faculty and to provide a forum for conversation and collaboration across disciplines
