VIDEO: Council Chair Gives ‘Princeton Pop-Up Lecture’ on James Baldwin at Yeh College

January 23, 2025

This fall, Humanities Council Chair Esther Schor (English) gave a “Princeton Pop-Up Lecture” at Yeh College. Her brief, impromptu talk centered the life of American writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin.

“James Baldwin, born 100 years ago at Harlem Hospital in New York, sounded his call for racial justice by exposing lies, skewering myths, and refusing victimhood,” Schor said.  “His writings traced the rise and fall of his hope that that Civil Rights Movement would transform this country.”

Schor also promoted the Humanities Council’s yearlong Baldwin Circles project, which celebrates Baldwin’s legacy and work through reading groups and events on campus.

Princeton Pop-Up Lectures begin in Spring 2023 at Yeh College. Faculty members including Asif Ghanzanfar (Psychology and Neuroscience), Yair Minzer (History), head of Yeh College, Jennifer Jennings (SPIA), and Elizabeth Armstrong (Sociology and SPIA) have given lectures that cover a range of topics.
