Hendrik Lorenz (Philosophy) has been appointed Vice Dean of Strategic Initiatives at the Graduate School for the 2024-25 academic year, as part of an Ivy + Mellon fellowship. Lorenz is also director of the graduate Program in Classical Philosophy, under the aegis of the Humanities Council.
In his new role, Lorenz will focus on improving mentoring in graduate education at Princeton. “My goal as a leader is to promote access to opportunity for all students. Access to effective mentorship is not distributed equally, but it should be,” said Lorenz, in a story on the Princeton Graduate School website. “I am delighted that I am now in a position to drive change towards access to effective mentorship for all graduate students.”
Lorenz received two grants for innovation and collaboration from the Humanities Council in 2023-24. The Council’s Magic Project funded a four-day workshop on Albertus Magnus’ De Natura Loci in spring 2024, which brought together faculty and scholars who have contributed research on the text.
He also received a Collaborative Humanities Grant for a three-year “Aristotle in the Americas” project, which builds on existing links with institutions in Latin America by establishing a collaborative framework that includes faculty members and graduate students at Princeton, and in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.
