On March 10-12, Humanities Council Chair Esther Schor (English) joined scholars and practitioners from across the country for the 2024 National Humanities Alliance Annual Meeting and Humanities Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C.
The annual, multi-day event provides the opportunity for faculty, administrators, and regional representatives to build their capacity to advocate for the humanities.
Schor and Rachael DeLue (Art & Archaeology) joined colleagues from the New Jersey delegation, including representatives from Montclair State University, Rutgers University, Kean University, and the Princeton Public Library, to make the case for increased federal funding for the humanities. The contingent met with members of the congressional offices of Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez and Reps. Thomas Kean, Andy Kim, Rob Menendez, Frank Pallone, Donald Payne, Jeff Van Drew, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.
This year’s goals were to champion increased funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Archives and Records Administration, and the Department of Education’s international education programs, including Title VI and Fulbright-Hays.
The event also featured a keynote speech from Colleen Shogun, the 11th Archivist of the United States and the first woman appointed to lead the National Archives, as well as remarks from Shelly G. Lowe (Navajo), the chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
