Scholar, artist, and author Denise Ferreira da Silva will deliver the Humanities Council’s Spring 2024 Gauss Seminars in Criticism. Her two-day visit to Princeton University, under the general title of “On Sensibility,” will include a public lecture and a lunch seminar.
Ferreira da Silva will present a lecture titled, “Annotations on Black Art: On Authority at the Threshold of Representation,” on Wednesday, March 6 at 5 pm in Betts Auditorium. In the talk, open to the public, she will reflect on artwork from Simone Leigh, Zinzi Minott, and Iagor Peres, and examine their questioning of the aesthetic field and how they confront the colonial, racial, and cisheteropatriarchal matrix.
During a lunch seminar on Thursday, March 7, titled “On Interiority,” Ferreira da Silva will consider whether the tools of raciality – or racial difference and cultural difference – can guide an analysis of interiority. Ferreira da Silva is the Samuel Rudin Professor in the Humanities, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and co-director of the Critical Racial & Anti Colonial Study Co-Lab at New York University. She writes on crucial global issues, which she approaches from an anticolonial black feminist perspective.
Ferreira da Silva is the author of the field-changing books Toward a Global Idea of Race and Unpayable Debt, as well as numerous articles which have been published in leading interdisciplinary journals. She has exhibited and lectured at major art venues, such as the Pompidou Center (Paris), Whitechapel Gallery (London, MASP (Sāo Paulo), Reina Sofia (Madrid), The Belkin (Vancouver), Guggenheim (New York), MACBA (Barcelona), and MoMA (New York).
