More people than ever before in human history are being forced to move away from their homelands. This conversation will explore the impact of these migrations—economic and political, environmental and gendered—on the music of the contemporary world. Music can be a longing for home and a platform for politics, and also a tool for waging cultural battles of recognition and identity in the face of an increasingly policed and walled world. Hilwi and Kun will discuss these musical struggles by migrants and refugees across Berlin, Los Angeles, Palestine, the US-Mexico border, and more. How are contemporary borders impacting the making of culture and music?
