Long-Term Visitor Victoria Wohl Explores ‘Philosophy and the Other’ in Classics Public Lecture

On February 3, Victoria Wohl, Distinguished Professor of Classics at the University of Toronto, delivered a wonderful lecture to inaugurate the Spring term, titled “Of Pigs and the Proper: Philosophy and the Other in Plutarch’s Gryllus.” Plutarch’s Gryllus, a strange and slender dialogue from the first century CE that resists easy generic categorization, provided the material for this pleasantly “improper” lecture, one that happily crisscrossed the boundaries of genre, discipline, periodization, and form, interrogating each with acuity, profundity, and a sense of humor.
