Martin Kern (East Asian Studies) was awarded the 18th Special Book Award of China, the highest distinction bestowed by the Chinese government on foreign writers, translators, and publishers.
The award, administered by China’s National Press and Publication Administration, was presented at a ceremony in Beijing on Tuesday, June 17. Kern, who is one of 16 winners, was recognized for his scholarly work on ancient Chinese literary culture.
A member of the Humanities Council’s Executive Committee, Kern also directed the University-wide collaboration “Comparative Antiquity,” a Council Global Initiative, from 2018-2022. Kern specializes in the textual culture of Chinese antiquity, and his research addresses topics across genres of ancient Chinese literature.
