Melissa Lane (Politics) was awarded the Journal of the History of Philosophy’s 2024 Book Prize for her latest book, “Of Rule and Office: Plato’s Ideas of the Political.”
“The [book] project first crystallized in the series of six Carlyle Lectures, titled Constitutions before Constitutionalism: Classical Greek Ideas of Office and Rule, which I delivered at the University of Oxford in 2018,” said Lane, in an author Q&A on the Humanities Council’s Faculty Bookshelf.
She continued work on the project during her tenure as an Old Dominion Research Professor in 2020-21, with support from the Humanities Council. The University Center for Human Values and the Department of Politics also provided support for the book.
