Program in Journalism Shares Roster of Fall 2020 Courses

April 3, 2020

The Program in Journalism is pleased to share its roster of Fall 2020 courses open to students from all majors. JRN’s popular seminars draw on the world’s most distinguished journalists as faculty. They have no prerequisites and fulfill requirements toward the program’s undergraduate certificate.

One course in the fall, International News: Migration Reporting, includes a break trip to Canada and requires that students apply to enroll (the application deadline is April 13). Deborah Amos, Ferris Professor of Journalism in Residence and international correspondent for NPR News, will teach this seminar focused on covering immigration, asylum, and refugee policy and practice in the United States and Canada. The week in Winnipeg and Toronto will give students an opportunity to report from the field.

Three fall courses will be offered by new visiting professors in the program:

  • Jane Ferguson, an Emmy- and Polk Award-winning correspondent for PBS NewsHour, will teach a McGraw Seminar in Writing on the past, present, and future of war reporting.
  • A course on The Literature of Fact, with a focus on writing about culture and its consumption, will be taught by Rachel Donadio, a contributing writer at The Atlantic.
  • Helen Thorpe, a veteran journalist and author of three award-winning books of narrative non-fiction, will lead the program’s seminar on Creative Non-Fiction.

Investigative Journalism: Accountability Reporting will round out the semester. A perennial favorite, the course covers the sophisticated reporting, research, and writing techniques that investigative journalists use to root out corruption in public and private institutions. It will be taught by Joe Stephens, the director of the Program in Journalism and a Ferris Professor of Journalism in Residence.
