Magic Grant Supports Ethiopian Manuscript Database for Global Research

June 12, 2019

In 2018, Wendy Belcher (Comparative Literature; African American Studies) launched the three-year Princeton Project on the Ethiopian Miracles of the Virgin Mary (PEMM) with primary funding from the Humanities Council David A. Gardner ’69 Magic Grant.

This international research project aims to translate and digitize the Gəˁəz manuscripts prioritizing the Täˀammərä Maryam (The Miracles of Mary), and to create a resource that will allow researchers around the world to explore the ways that these African tales evolved across regions, languages, and periods.

PEMM is a Humanities Council’s Global Initiative which develops teaching collaborations and new networks across the world. It received additional support from the Center for Digital Humanities to create a data structure. The translation of the core text is supported by a Grant from the Office of the Dean for Research.
