Positions and Prospects: A New Speaker Series in Media Studies

The Humanities Council is pleased to present a new, seven-part, year-long speaker series called Positions and Prospects, about the field of Media Studies. Organized by Devin Fore (German) and beginning on October 12, the series provides to the University community a survey of some of the most important contemporary scholarship on practice and theory in Media Studies, conducted by leaders in the field who apply the critical hermeneutical methods of the humanities to media historiography and the material analysis of communication technologies.

On Thursday, October 12, Alexander R. Galloway will be the first among the series’ speakers to present a Positions and Prospects lecture: “How Did the Computer Learn to See?” Galloway is a professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University.

Three more Positions and Prospects speakers are scheduled to participate later this fall:

November 6      Natasha Schüll, New York University

November 29    Lisa Gitelman, New York University

December 11      Luciana Parisi, Goldsmiths, University of London

The series will continue with three additional speakers in Spring 2018:

February 8        Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, Brown University

March 28           Jonathan Sterne, McGill University

April 16              Thomas Elsaesser, University of Amsterdam/Columbia University
