SUMMARY:Falling Awake & Other Poems
DESCRIPTION:Labyrinth is honored to welcome Alice Oswald during her residency at Princeton University\, sponsored by the Department of Classics. Her most recent book\, Falling Awake\, was awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize. She has also been awarded the T.S. Eliot Prize. \nOswald was trained as a classicist. Her first collection of poetry\, The Thing in the Gap-Stone Stile\, received a Forward Poetry Prize. Oswald often works in book-length projects and is known for her interests in gardening\, ecology\, and music. Her other collections of poetry include Dart\, Woods\, etc.\, Weeds and Wild Flowers\, A Sleepwalk on the Severn\, and Memorial\, which won the 2013 Warwick prize for writing. \nAlice Oswald’s acclaimed volume Memorial portrays fallen soldiers from Homer’s Iliad. Falling Awake expands on that imagery—defining life as a slowly falling weight\, where beings fight against their inevitable end. Oswald re-imagines classical figures such as Orpheus and Tithonus alive in an English landscape together with shadows\, flies\, villagers\, dew\, crickets—all characterized in tension between the weight of death and their own willpower.

SUMMARY:Everybody Lies: Big Data\, New Data\, and What the Internet Can Tell us about Who We Really Are
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to a conversation about what the vast amounts of information now instantly available to us reveals about ourselves and our world—provided we ask the right questions. \nBy the end of an average day in the early twenty-first century\, human beings searching the internet will amass eight trillion gigabytes of data. This staggering amount of information can tell us a great deal about who we are—the fears\, desires\, and behaviors that drive us\, and the conscious and unconscious decisions we make. From the profound to the mundane\, we can gain astonishing knowledge about the human psyche that less than twenty years ago\, seemed unfathomable. Everybody Lies offers fascinating\, surprising\, and sometimes laugh-out-loud insights into everything from economics to ethics to sports to race\, sex\, gender and more\, all drawn from the world of big data. What percentage of white voters didn’t vote for Barack Obama because he’s black? Do parents secretly favor boy children over girls? Do violent films affect the crime rate? Can you beat the stock market? How regularly do we lie about our sex lives and who’s more self-conscious about sex\, men or women? Investigating these questions and a host of others\, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz offers revelations that can help us understand ourselves and our lives better. All of us are touched by big data everyday\, and its influence is multiplying. \nSeth Stephens-Davidowitz is a New York Times op-ed contributor and former Google data scientist. Aaron Retica is Chief of Research for New York Times Magazine. Sam Wang is Professor of Neuroscience at Princeton University. He is known for his books Welcome to Your Brain and Welcome to Your Child’s Brain\, as well as for the Princeton Election Consortium website. \nCo-sponsored by the Humanities Council’s Ferris Seminars in Journalism \n

SUMMARY:As If: Idealization and Ideals
DESCRIPTION:Idealization is a fundamental feature of human thought. We build simplified models in our scientific research and utopias in our political imaginations. Concepts like belief\, desire\, reason\, and justice are bound up with idealizations and ideals. \nWe are pleased to invite you to a conversation with Kwame Anthony Appiah\, one of America’s foremost philosophers and cultural theorists. Life is a constant adjustment between the models we make and the realities we encounter. In idealizing\, we proceed “as if” our representations were true\, while knowing they are not. This is not a dangerous or distracting occupation\, Kwame Anthony Appiah shows. Our best chance of understanding nature\, society\, and ourselves is to open our minds to a plurality of imperfect depictions that together allow us to manage and interpret our world. \nIn a broad range of activities\, we have some notion of the truth yet continue with theories that we recognize are\, strictly speaking\, false. From this vantage point\, Appiah demonstrates that a picture one knows to be unreal can be a vehicle for accessing reality. As If explores how strategic untruth plays a critical role in far-flung areas of inquiry: decision theory\, psychology\, natural science\, and political philosophy. A polymath who writes with mainstream clarity\, Appiah defends the centrality of the imagination not just in the arts but in science\, morality\, and everyday life. \nAnthony Appiah was Professor of Philosophy at Princeton University before moving to New York University in 2014. He currently holds an appointment at the NYU Department of Philosophy and NYU’s School of Law. His many seminal books include Cosmopolitanism and The Honor Code. \nCo-sponsored by the Humanities Council

SUMMARY:Past\, Present\, and Future: Old and New Perspectives in Dodona and Greek Oracles
DESCRIPTION:The recent publication of about 4200 new lamellae from the oracle of Dodona \, was a revolution only a few people noticed. Yet the existence of 4200 new epigraphical texts focused on a same theme is in itself truly exciting\, especially in the field of oracles\, which has long been exaggeratedly dominated by literary texts.  How is Dodona\, even before 2013\, already a very promising case-study for approaching Greek divination and history\, and why\, after 2013\, scholars who have remained reluctant to change their minds about the foundations of Greek mantic practice will definitely be forced to do so. The lecture will analyze the image of Dodona according to the literary tradition\, then look at the decline of the oracles as it was seen by the Greeks themselves\, to eventually come back to the epigraphical evidence and the necessary shift in paradigm about and to what extent divination played a role in Greek society and history.
