SUMMARY:Svetlana Kana Radević: Aggregate Assemblies\, 2023 Womxn in Design and Architecture Conference
DESCRIPTION:Register here. \nSvetlana Kana Radević’s architecture is a radical act of mediation. Rising to prominence in post-war Yugoslavia\, her buildings speak on all scales\, engaging geo-political and social complexities. Drawing from knowledge of materiality and vernacular traditions within her native Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia)\, her work filters modernism’s globalized forces through an intimate\, place-based lens. Radević’s civic spaces re-centered provincial knowledge and facilitated a socially-progressive public sphere within the Yugoslav socialist state. \nAt age 29\, Radević became the youngest and only woman to receive the national Yugoslavian Borba Award for Architecture in 1968 for her design of Hotel Podgorica. Prominent projects such as the Podgorica Bus Terminal\, Petrovac Apartment Building\, and Monument to Fallen Fighters express Radević’s commitment to generating a symbiosis between civic engagement and landscape design through the use of local building materials\, bold forms\, and generous proportions. Radević articulated her own cross-cultural practice\, working simultaneously between the United States\, Japan\, France\, Russia\, and Yugoslavia\, where she eventually returned for the remainder of her career. \nThe seventh Womxn in Design and Architecture Conference at the Princeton School of Architecture honors the life and work of Svetlana Kana Radević. The 2022–23 conference proceedings will call on the discipline with timely topics and inquiries\, such as What is architecture’s role in times of social and political transformation? How can architecture re-center local systems of power\, collective memory\, and vernacular tradition? Disrupting the dichotomy between periphery and center while standing as one of the most avant-garde voices of Yugoslavian architecture\, Radević’s legacy raises questions that are as pressing now as they were during her lifetime. \nParticipants include Ljiljana Blagojević Ph.D.\, Sonja Dragović\, Dr. Lina Džuverović\, Anna Kats\, Ena Kukić\, Vladimir Kulić\, Prof. a.D. Dr.-Ing. SUMMARY:Felon: An American Washi Tale by Reginald Dwayne Betts
DESCRIPTION:Alone in solitary confinement\, a teenager called out to the men in the hole with him: “Somebody\, send me a book!” Moments later\, Dudley Randall’s The Black Poets slid under his cell door. Those pages were the start of the teen’s transformation into a poet\, lawyer\, and promoter of the rights of prisoners. Now\, 23 years after his release from prison\, Reginald Dwayne Betts explores the experience and consequences of his incarceration in a compelling solo theater show based on his poetry collection\, Felon. Betts\, who recently received a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship\, advocates for literacy in prisons and is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit organization Freedom Reads\, which opens 500-book micro-libraries inside prison housing units across the country and brings contemporary writers and artists together with incarcerated audiences. DESCRIPTION:M+M Doctoral Colloquium – Spring 2023\nwith Sophie Brady\, Lucia Filipova\, Sara Green\, and Angelika Joseph\nTuesday\, March 07\, 2023 @5pm ET\nN107 (School of Architecture) \nThe Doctoral colloquium is an exciting opportunity for Ph.D. candidates who pursue the M+M graduate certificate to share their research and receive feedback from faculty and colleagues across a wide range of departments. \nSophie Brady | Music\n“Africa Electronica: Sonic Experimentation\, Transcontinental Circulation\, and Francophone African Radio\, 1950-1980”\n[Advisor: Gavin Steingo] \nHow does recognizing the robust tradition of African experimentalism change our understanding of the histories of avant-garde music and African music? I answer this question by tracing the musical activities of African musicians and radio technicians who trained in Paris and were active at radio stations in West and Central Africa in the 1960s-70s. Though these artists identified as popular musicians\, their radio training inspired them to use electronic instruments and postproduction techniques associated with avant-garde music. I demonstrate how these musicians interacted with\, resisted\, and exploited the French (post)colonial radio to create their own unique styles of music during and after decolonization. Scholars have long associated experimental music with Europe and North America\, but I argue that not only were African musicians significantly involved in experimental music-making within their own countries\, but that they also shaped musical development all over the world. \nLucia Filipova | Spanish and Portuguese\n“Women’s Fears and Fantasies as New Commodities During the Spanish Miracle:\nThe Rising Middle Class in Spanish Musical Film\, Comic\, and Advertisement”\n[Reader: Javier Guerrero] \nIn the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War\, Spanish society returned to the 19th-century division of the public and the private sphere\, with women overseeing the latter where they were supposedly safe from the negative influence of industrial capitalism. However\, during the Spanish Miracle (1959–1974)\, media and advertisement penetrated Spanish homes leading to a modernization of the private sphere by turning women into a driving force of postwar capitalism. My hypothesis is that\, in accordance with the values of the Sección Femenina\, Spanish housewives were supposed to become attractive objects in the home just like the numerous commodities that they were enticed to purchase. In my presentation I will showcase this by conducting a close reading of Spanish musical films\, comics\, and advertisement in women’s magazines from this period. I will particularly focus on the role and perspective of child/adolescent protagonists\, who encourage a reading against the grain. \nSara Green | Art & Archaeology\n“Against Surface Revolutions: Mark-making in Isidore Isou’s Treatise on Drool and Eternity (1951)”\n[Advisor: Brigid Doherty] \nThis talk re-reads the handmade scratched and inked lines that blemish frames throughout Isidore Isou’s Treatise on Drool and Eternity\, a 1951 film comprising a manifesto on the art of film. These marks\, applied to the filmstrip in a destructive practice Isou termed “chiseling\,” have commonly been understood to enact Isou’s call for a shift in priority from cinematic images to sound. I argue that chiseling’s visual effects can also be seen to articulate interfaces between contemporary political discourse and routines of the film industry in midcentury France—primarily\, a diminished linguistic facility that Isou locates in both. Situating an analysis of the film in relation to its Cold War context as well as Isou’s writings\, my talk reads the Treatise’s mark-making practice as accruing conflicted meanings that probe the conditions of viewership Isou understood to inform contemporary cinema. \nAngelika Joseph | Architecture\n“The Chicago Indian Village: An Affective Architectural History of Indigenous Dispossession\n[Advisor: Beatriz Colomina] \nIn 1970\, Carol Warrington (Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin) was evicted from her apartment after refusing to pay a non-Native landlord to live in a derelict slum apartment in an ‘Indian slum.’ She then moved her six children into a tipi set up in front of their former home. Choosing to be homeless in a political and explicitly Indigenous way\, the Warrington family started the Chicago Indian Village (CIV). For two years\, 100+ activists endured a cycle of repatriations and dispossessions as CIV moved through a series of architectural takeovers. \nThrough the close visual analysis of the participants’ affect at the moment of repatriation and the moment of dispossession\, this chapter illuminates the personal\, cultural\, and historical meanings these activists ascribed to repatriated landscapes. Analyzing faces to understand places\, this chapter explores the possibilities and limitations of reconstructing emotional architectural histories of violence and dispossession through media archives.

SUMMARY:Mellon Forum // Practicing Palimpsestry: Archives\, Counter-mapping\, and Spatial Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:We examine the spatial-socio-ecological processes that have shaped the Seattle urban landscape\, the ways that people have used and interpreted this landscape\, and how these spatial narratives can further contextualize understandings of our relationship between history\, place\, and contemporary urban development and environmental decision making. This has been carried out through various interventions that provide windows into landscape and urban history\, different ways of knowing and seeing\, and various ways of presenting intersecting narratives of place. These exercises of “storytelling with the shapes of time” integrate several streams of research and disciplinary methods bringing together ethnographic and archival sources\, cultural history\, and environmental science with geospatial methodologies\, public interpretation\, artistic design practices\, and informed imaginings.

SUMMARY:The role of demonstratives across languages
DESCRIPTION:Many traditional assumptions about demonstratives such as ‘that’ and ‘those’ and how they differ from definites like ‘the’ have been reevaluated in the recent semantic literature against cross-linguistic data. Taking one of the analyses for demonstratives under which they are definite descriptions with an additional restriction\, this talk focuses on the question of what this additional argument consists of. Based on data from conventional uses of demonstratives such as those with pointing and ‘exceptional’ ones such as presentational and bridging uses\, I argue for an updated semantics of definite and demonstrative expressions\, one that cuts the spectrum into two dimensions: the restrictions and the linking layer. I argue that the main function of the additional argument is that of linking the description to the intended referent\, and that this linker is inherently deictic\, thus relating it back to some of the more traditional accounts of demonstratives such as Kaplan. I discuss the predictions of this theory\, specifically on how children might acquire the different uses of demonstratives in language development. \nDorothy Ahn is an Assistant Professor in the Linguistics Department at Rutgers University – New Brunswick. As a semanticist interested in cross-linguistic typology\, she investigates how the underlying building blocks of meaning compose to derive the patterns that we see within and across languages. To do so\, she makes use of both formal theoretic and experimental approaches to natural language semantics and pragmatics. Dorothy Ahn received her Ph.D. degree in Linguistics from Harvard University in May 2019 with a dissertation looking at definite expressions. She is generally interested in elements that are associated (at least structurally) with the nominal domain such as demonstratives\, anaphora\, number marking\, and quantifiers.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Program in Latin American Studies for a special concert by Puerto Rican composer and classical and jazz pianist Alfonso Fuentes Colón\, former VISAPUR fellow\, which will take place on Thursday\, March 9\, from 7:00pm – 8:30pm\, at Princeton University’s Richardson Auditorium. Ode to the Fallen Trees is an orchestral piece influenced by the catastrophic aftermath of hurricane María on Puerto Rico that Fuentes started writing during his summer stay at Princeton in 2018. The program will include a version of the Ode for piano and clarinet\, with special guest clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz\, and improvisations of traditional\, classical\, and popular musical pieces from the Caribbean and Latino traditions. This concert is free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE SPECIAL GUESTS\nAlfonso Fuentes Colón is a Puerto Rican composer\, concert improvisation pianist\, commercial musician\, poet and educator\, with international presence. He has produced a profoundly passionate\, artistic\, diverse\, and inclusive canon of work\, an endeavor that is still ongoing. He graduated from the New England Conservatory during the innovating times of 1980’s. As former Interim Dean of Academics Affairs and current Professor at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico\, he has successfully developed and implemented new teaching methods. Fuentes has been a visiting artist at the State University of New York at Albany\, Hunter College-CUNY\, Sichuan Conservatory of Music\, Capital Normal University of Beijing\, Music Mountain Academy\, among others\, and participated in various music forums in Argentina\, Brazil\, Costa Rica\, Cuba\, Guatemala\, Mexico\, Panamá\, Puerto Rico\, Venezuela. Fuentes has been advocated before the Legislative Assembly for the development of music creation and local music employment in Puerto Rico. In appreciation to his contribution\, La Corporación Arpegio (The Arpeggio Corporation) has created the Professor Alfonso Luis Fuentes Colón Award. As a Visiting Fellow in Princeton (PLAS-VISAPUR\, 2018) Fuentes worked in the orchestration of the first movement of his concerto for clarinet and large orchestra\, Oda para los árboles caídos (Ode to the Fallen Trees)\, inspired by the devastation caused by Hurricane María in Puerto Rico in 2017. This work constitutes a message of hope. \nOskar Espina Ruiz has been described by the press as a “masterful soloist” (La Nación\, Costa Rica) and a “highly expressive clarinetist” (Nevskoye Vremia\, Russia). He has performed at major concert halls and festivals to high critical acclaim\, including concerto performances at the Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and recitals in New York City\, Washington DC\, Moscow\, Madrid\, Tokyo\, Beijing\, Shanghai and Hong Kong. SUMMARY:Spatial Operations. Harun Farocki and Architecture
DESCRIPTION:A continuous interest in architecture informs Harun Farocki’s work on different levels\, but it has not yet been explored in detail. The observational film Sauerbruch Hutton Architects (2013) and the comparative study on brick production In Comparison (2009) are direct expressions of Farocki’s fascination with construction and building methods\, but works such as Prison Images (2000) or The Creators of the Shopping Worlds (2001) also revolve around the relationship between built space\, media technologies\, and social conditioning. \nIn his lecture\, Pantenburg will begin by focusing on Farocki’s take on the intersection between architecture\, economics\, and history during the period between 1977 and 1985\, examining two productions made for West-German public television (WDR): Industry and Photography (1979) and Stadtbild (1981). While the former looks at the industrial sector and its architectural drive towards efficiency in the Weimar Republic\, Stadtbild provides a complementary perspective by focusing on the rebuilding of west-German cities\, in particular West-Berlin\, after World War II. An unfinished film with the working title Haus (ca. 1982)\, found in the Farocki Institut’s archive in 2019\, also testifies to Farocki’s ongoing fascination with architecture. \nGoing beyond these examples\, the lecture will explore the more extended notions of architecture and urban space that pervade work like Images of the World and the Inscription of War (1988) or the Eye/Machine (2000/2002) series. In particular\, the focus here will be on the intimate relation between construction and destruction\, a fundamental premise of Farocki’s approach and more recent examples of “forensic architecture.”

SUMMARY:Archaeological Research at the Ancient Ionian City of Notion
DESCRIPTION:Notion was a Greek city on the western coast of Ionia\, 50 km south of Smyrna. It was closely associated with the inland town of Colophon\, 15 km to the north; from the 2nd century BC onward\, it was known as New Colophon\, or Colophon-by-the-Sea. Prior research has shown that Notion was only intensively occupied from the 3rd century BC to the 1st century AD. The archaeology of Notion illuminates the turbulent history of Ionia in the Hellenistic period\, and the different ways in which local communities responded to the imposition of Roman rule. \nThis lecture reports on the results of a new program of archaeological excavation at Notion\, begun in 2022 after five years of survey. As preserved\, Notion is a grid-planned city\, surrounded by stout fortification walls. Excavation began with examination of a centrally located courtyard house and will include investigation of other houses throughout the city as well as civic buildings\, especially the Bouleuterion (Council House). Our research program also includes study of the surrounding region\, including the harbor\, the cemeteries\, local stone quarries\, and the water supply system.

SUMMARY:Fear of others: Some comments on the fear of witchcraft in traditional China
DESCRIPTION:This talk will introduce a book manuscript that deals with the fear of witchcraft and its presumed perpetrators in traditional China. In line with existing scholarship into similar fears elsewhere (most extensively studied for Western Europa)\, accusations of witchcraft are understood as the product of bad social relationships. At least two types of fear were particularly prominent. One was the fear that a person was possessed by another creature controlled by another human being. This fear can still be found in most local cultures (“minorities”) but has seemingly disappeared from most of the imperial core of traditional China from the 10th century onwards. The other was the fear that someone is making figurines or little images to harm someone\, usually the person (rarely someone’s animals or other resources in the Chinese case) making the accusation or someone close to her or him. This fear was connected to real practices of cursing\, obtaining sexual access\, and healing\, all of which used a representation of the person who was addressed in the ritual. For reasons of time\, the talk’s primary focus will be the fear of figurines. In both types of fears\, both male and female persons can be either the accused or the accuser.

SUMMARY:Reading\, Scribbling\, Copying: Cy Twombly and the Modern Greek Poets
DESCRIPTION:[Twombly’s] worktables are covered with oil crayons; pencils; tubes of pigment … art books … and a book of modern Greek poems in translation\, turned to George Seferis’s “Three Secret Poems.” Several lines of one stanza have been altered by Twombly. … A section of the edited and spliced poem (with a few new words added by Twombly) is written on the canvas of Summer [Quattro Stagioni]\, in Twombly’s inimitable\, childish scrawl. \nVogue magazine\, 1994 \nIn Cy Twombly’s studio\, the painter faced the poet. Twombly filled his workspace in southern Italy with books on art and poetry\, including numerous translations of George Seferis and C.P. Cavafy. Here\, Twombly explored fertile intersections between his visual art and the poetry of Seferis and Cavafy\, which the artist repeatedly used in pictorial and sculptural work in the early 1990s. These texts trace the painter’s “active” reading and treatment of poetic verse\, which he transforms into pictorial motifs by transferring words to canvas. Through the study of Twombly’s reading of Seferis’ and Cavafy’s poetry\, this paper examines the text-image and painting-poetry dialogue throughout the creative process of an influential artist from the New York school.

SUMMARY:War and Machine
DESCRIPTION:In 1914\, when Henri Bergson addressed the outbreak of the First World War\, he claimed that Germany’s turn towards industrialism and mechanism was accountable for the war\, because instead of “spiritualization of matter\,” it produced a “mechanization of spirit.” Later in The Two Sources of Morality and Religion (1932)\, Bergson further stated that wars of the modern time are bound up with industrial characters of the civilization. Bergson’s analysis has little to do with modern military machines\, but rather it concerns the relation between human and technology\, or in other words\, war is the result of the “conflict of organs.” In 1948\, Norbert Wiener in his Cybernetics\, or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine responded to Bergson by claiming that the opposition between mechanism and vitalism belongs to a badly posed question because it is now overcome by cybernetics. How then shall we read Bergson’s critique today? \nYuk Hui wrote his doctoral thesis under the French philosopher Bernard Stiegler (1952-2020) at Goldsmiths College in London and obtained his Habilitation in philosophy from Leuphana University in Germany. Hui is author of several monographs that have been translated into a dozen languages\, including On the Existence of Digital Objects (2016)\, The Question Concerning Technology in China:-An Essay in Cosmotechnics (2016)\, Recursivity and Contingency ( 2019)\, and Art and Cosmotechnics (2021). Hui is co-editor of 30 Years after Les Immatériaux: Art\, Science and Theory (2015) and editor of Philosophy after Automation (Philosophy Today\, Vol.65. No.2\, 2021)\, among others. Since 2014\, Hui has been the initiator and convenor of the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology and sits as a juror of the Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture since 2020. He is currently a professor of philosophy of technology and media at the City University of Hong Kong. \nCo-sponsored by the Humanities Council\, the German Department\, the Department of Philosophy and the Department of East Asian Studies

SUMMARY:Investigating Injustice with Data
DESCRIPTION:The digital age has transformed investigative journalism. For virtually every coverage beat\, proof of wrongdoing and injustice is hidden in opaque databases. Meanwhile\, readers no longer consume news in print and have developed an unprecedented skepticism for mainstream journalism. Reporter and former software developer Neil Bedi will share his experiences navigating this new landscape by combining old school reporting skills with nontraditional technology-driven techniques. \nBedi\, a visiting Ferris Professor of Journalism in the Program in Journalism\, is a reporter at ProPublica investigating federal government agencies and policies in Washington\, D.C. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2021 as an investigative reporter at the Tampa Bay Times\, after coming to journalism from a job developing software on Wall Street. Discussant Meredith Martin is an Associate Professor of English and the Director of the Digital Humanities Center. \nThe Humanities Council’s Program in Journalism invites faculty\, graduate students and staff to participate in the next in our series of events where distinguished visiting journalists discuss their work and pressing issues of the day with faculty from a variety of disciplines. SUMMARY:Sites of Memory: A Symposium on Toni Morrison and the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Sites of Memory: A Symposium on Toni Morrison and the Archive brings together scholars\, artists\, writers\, and activists to celebrate\, interrogate\, and reflect upon the archive in relation to Toni Morrison’s writing\, her teaching\, and her public intellectual work. The event is part of a year of programming surrounding the Spring 2023 exhibition Toni Morrison: Sites of Memory. While Morrison’s literary output is well known\, this symposium breaks new ground by inviting attendees to think with her archive\, the Toni Morrison Papers\, about less recognized aspects of her art: her composition practices\, her unpublished writings\, and her daily life as a teacher at Princeton. In presentations\, conversations\, and performances\, participants and attendees will think capaciously about the archive\, taking it up as performance\, as idea\, and as something that gets articulated in published and un-published work. Across three days\, we will explore the scope of Morrison’s archive\, its central place in Princeton’s history and intellectual life\, and its status as an entry point for reconsidering Morrison’s creative work and the way it continues to shape art\, writing\, and performance. \nTaking inspiration from Morrison’s investment in collaboration and innovative programming\, the symposium’s schedule includes: a keynote lecture; a plenary conversation; five roundtables curated by Morrison scholars; commissioned performances by artists Mame Diarra Spies and Daniel Alexander Jones at The McCarter Theatre;  and additional campus programming. Across these events\, the symposium emphasizes how the Morrison Papers is very much a living archive–a site of collaboration\, innovation\, and experimentation. SUMMARY:On the Edge of the World: Rome’s Fluid Frontier in Northern Britain
DESCRIPTION:Britain was the last region in Western Europe conquered by the Roman Empire. However\, its occupation was never completed: despite several campaigns by Roman armies\, most of the northern territories remained free of direct Roman rule. Over several generations\, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire moved back and forth between modern-day northern England and southern Scotland\, creating a fluid borderland of encounters and resistance. This lecture will provide an overview on the interactions between Roman power and indigenous communities\, presenting some results from new research projects that are fundamentally transforming our knowledge of the period between c. AD 70-400. Moreover\, it will reflect on what the evidence from a rather peripheral region of the ancient world can contribute to wider debates on borderlands and the limits of empires\, past and present. \nManuel Fernández-Götz is Abercromby Professor of Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. His main research interests are Iron Age and Roman societies in Europe\, the archaeology of identities\, and conflict archaeology. He has authored over 200 publications and directed fieldwork projects in Spain\, Germany\, the United Kingdom\, and Croatia. His research has been recognized with the award of the Philip Leverhulme Prize and the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Thomas Reid Medal. He is currently directing the Leverhulme- funded project ‘Beyond Walls: Reassessing Iron Age and Roman Encounters in Northern Britain’.

SUMMARY:Venetian Air and the Avatars of Disegno in Sixteenth-Century Art Theory
DESCRIPTION:When praising cities in the early modern era it was typical to comment upon the advantages of their particular siting\, especially when it resulted in mild temperatures and good air quality. This presentation examines ways in which early modern art theorists\, Giorgio Vasari in particular\, used these environmental tropes to support their outlook on Venetian art\, bolstering their broader critical frameworks. \nLorenzo Buonanno is Assistant Professor in the Art and Art History Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He specializes in the art of early modern Venice. His studies on Venetian sculpture have appeared in volumes such as Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Immagini di devozione\, spazi della fede\, edited by Carlo Corsato and Deborah Howard\, and The Art of Sculpture in Fifteenth-Century Italy\, edited by Amy Bloch and Daniel Zolli\, and his first book\, The Performance of Sculpture in Renaissance Venice\, was published in March 2022.
