What can we learn about The Second Sex by paying attention to its situation? Drawing on her forthcoming commentary on The Second Sex, Kirkpatrick outlines a new reading that challenges both social constructionist and phenomenological interpretations — and argues that there is still more to learn from Beauvoir.
Kate Kirkpatrick is Fellow in Philosophy at Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford. She is the author of several books and articles on the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, and of the internationally acclaimed biography Becoming Beauvoir: A Life.
