DESCRIPTION:As part of the Black History Month\, you’re invited to the free screening of “Ni Chaînes Ni Maîtres” (English: “No Chains No Masters”) by Franco-Beninese filmmaker Simon Moutaïrou (2024) who will be in attendance for a Q&A to talk about his movie a few days before its national release in the USA and a few weeks before the Cesar Ceremony. \nPractical information\nOpen to everyone. In French and Wolof with English subtitles\, the screening will start at 7:00 PM on Friday\, February 7th\, 2025\, and will last approximately 90 minutes. Followed by a 45-minute conversation. Doors open at 6:45 PM. \nSynopsis\n1759\, Mauritius Island\, Indian Ocean. The island is controlled by French settlers and the deported slave population live in fear while toiling in the sugar cane plantations. Unlike her disillusioned father Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye)\, 16-year-old Mati (Anna Diakhere Thiandoum) refuses to keep her head down and accept her fate. One night she flees from the plantation\, hoping to escape violence and seek freedom in a remote part of the island\, where a community of fugitives is said to live. As the plantation owner (Benoît Magimel) hires the merciless slave hunter Madame La Victoire (Camille Cottin) and her sons to pursue Mati\, Massamba realises the brutal consequences awaiting his daughter if she’s captured. He has no choice but to break his chains and set off on a desperate search for her.
