SUMMARY:Translating International Journalism
DESCRIPTION:In a globalized world of international media conglomerates\, it’s a paradox that journalism in translation plays such a small role in the Anglophone world. Diverse journalistic traditions can offer new perspectives\, but do their independent conventions and standards present major cultural barriers to readers? The Polish reportaż author Margo Rejmer and Mexican crónica author Julián Herbert join their translators\, Antonia Lloyd-Jones and Christina MacSweeney\, to discuss how can we increase communication among journalistic traditions\, and what role translators play in bringing international journalism to new audiences. \nMargo Rejmer is an award-winning Polish novelist\, reporter\, and writer of short stories. Her books have been translated into eight languages. \nAntonia Lloyd-Jones has translated works by several of Poland’s leading contemporary novelists (including Nobel Prize laureate Olga Tokarczuk) and reportage authors\, as well as crime fiction\, poetry and children’s books. She is a mentor for the Emerging Translators Mentorship Program\, and former co-chair of the UK Translators Association. \nJulián Herbert is a writer\, musician\, and teacher\, and is the author of The House of the Pain of Others\, Tomb Song and Bring Me the Head of Quentin Tarantino. \nChristina MacSweeney is the Valle Inclan 2016 prize awardee for her translation of Valeria Luiselli’s The Story of My Teeth\, and Among Strange Victims by Daniel Saldãna París and was a finalist in the 2017 Best Translated Book Award. \nSean G. Bye is the PTIC Fall 2021 Translator in Residence. He is a translator of Polish literature and was recently longlisted for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation for his translation of Ellis Island: A People’s History by Małogrzata Szejnert. \nRegister for this event here.
