SUMMARY:Sarah Broom in Conversation with Imani Perry
DESCRIPTION:The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students is thrilled to announce the on-campus return of the FOCUS Lecture Series\, an interdisciplinary effort to bring the very best in anti-racist scholarship\, thought\, and action to Princeton’s campus. The next FOCUS event\, featuring author and journalist Sarah M. Broom in conversation with Professor Imani Perry\, will take place on Tuesday\, January 11th\, 2022 at 4:30 PM in the Chancellor Green Rotunda. Undergraduate attendees\, either in person or online\, will be given a free copy of Broom’s memoir\, The Yellow House\, courtesy of Source of Knowledge Bookstore in Newark\, NJ. \nDue to current University COVID guidelines\, the in-person portion of the program is open only to Princeton students\, faculty\, and staff currently in the testing protocol. However\, the event will be livestreamed and audience members online will be able to ask questions of our speakers. Undergraduate attendees\, either in person or online\, will be given a free copy of Broom’s memoir\, The Yellow House\, courtesy of Source of Knowledge Bookstore in Newark\, NJ. \nLivestream links will be posted on this site soon; stay tuned! \nThe Yellow House\, which won the 2019 National Book Award\, tells the story of Broom’s family across generations\, of their struggle and triumph as they carved out a home in the troubled neighborhood of New Orleans East. The FOCUS event will revolve around the same themes explored in the book – the interplay of identity\, belonging\, race\, and privilege. Broom’s book and the conversation it sparks are as relevant to contemporary politics as they are to literature; this FOCUS event is unmissable for anyone interested in either one. \nThis is the second FOCUS event to be held in person\, and will be a unique opportunity to finally bring the incredible conversations of past FOCUS events\, which were hosted online\, to Princeton’s campus. The event is a part of FOCUS’s Wintersession program in anti-racist education\, which also marks the start of a formal partnership between ODUS\, the Department of African American Studies\, and the Humanities Council. FOCUS is intended to supplement and reinforce anti-racist education in all facets of University life\, and this partnership is an important step in bringing its resources into the classroom and beyond.
