Africa World Initiative; Program in African Studies

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa. We take this milestone in the history of Africa and the world as an opportunity to celebrate the landmark and critically commemorate the past and reflect on the present and future shaped by the development of the last 50 years of history in these countries. Lusophone Africa 50: Liberation, Memory & Beyond seeks to be a space of reflection about these simultaneously critical and underrepresented countries in African studies. The topic of memory allows us to bring a broad discussion about Portuguese-speaking Africa and the several aspects that shaped its history, while simultaneously challenging our understandings of it to advance the scholarship about it.
