SUMMARY:Healing Disease in Classical Greece
DESCRIPTION:How were illness and healing experienced\, endured\, and addressed by individuals and communities in Greek antiquity\, and what healing traditions and resources developed to control and cope with sickness in Greek communities? These are the broader historical questions underpinning this talk and my current book project\, which examines how Greek communities evolved to manage healthcare and mitigate disease between c. 550–250 BCE. This lecture explores how one particular healing practitioner understood and treated one chronic disease; it illuminates his operations within the interwoven professional and cultural systems or medical “marketplaces” that evolved to manage health and disease in ancient Greek communities.
