Carolyn Laferrière, Princeton University Art Museum, Nathan Arrington, Art & Archaeology and Hellenic Studies

Thu, 9/24 · 4:30 pm—5:30 pm · Grand Hall, Art Museum

Department of Art and Archeology; Department of Classics; Princeton University Art Museum

In this talk, Carolyn Laferrière, curator of ancient Mediterranean art, and Nathan Arrington, professor and chair of the Department of Art & Archaeology and Hellenic Studies, will discuss how mortuary objects in ancient Greece could establish intimate connections between the living and the dead, allowing mourners to approach the deceased once again—if only in the mind—and to form communities of remembrance.

The talk is presented in advance of a special exhibition focusing on the more personal aspects of mourning, opening in 2029.

Cosponsored by the Department of Art and Archeology, the Department of Classics, and the Princeton University Art Museum.
