SUMMARY:Gauss Seminars in Criticism: A Call to Action: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal
DESCRIPTION:The Humanities Council is pleased to announce the first of two Gauss Seminars in Criticism for Fall 2019: “A Call to Action: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal\,” featuring Naomi Klein in conversation with Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. \nNaomi Klein is a public intellectual\, an award winning journalist\, activist\, author of several international best sellers\, and the inaugural Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair of Media\, Culture\, and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University. Among her many influential books are No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies (Picador\, 1999)\, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism (Metropolitan Books\, 2007)\, and most recently On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal (Simon & Schuster\, 2019)\, in which she explains how bold climate action can be a blueprint for a just and thriving society. \nKeeanga-Yamahtta Taylor is Assistant Professor and Charles H. McIlwain University Preceptor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton. She is author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation (Haymarket Books\, 2016)\, which won the 2016 Lannan Cultural Freedom Award for an Especially Notable Book\, and Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership (University of North Carolina\, 2019)\, as well as editor of How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective (Haymarket Books\, 2017)\, which won the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ nonfiction in 2018. \nThe Gauss Seminars presents this event in partnership with Labyrinth Books\, which will host a book signing after the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
