Linguist and language creator David J. Peterson presents The Art of Language Invention

November 15, 2017

David J. Peterson is a linguist, language creator, and author.  This fall, he was a Visiting Fellow in the Humanities Council and Program in Linguistics.

In his October 18 lecture “The Art of Language Invention,” Peterson enthralled audience members as he described how he created new languages for HBO’s Game of Thrones and Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, among many other television and film projects.  He recounted how he came to study language, what his methods are in constructing new languages, and how winning a contest led to his current profession.

The Humanities Council’s Short-Term Fellows Program brings scholars from around the world to Princeton for three-to-five intensive days of classes, colloquia and informal discussions. Peterson was in Princeton from October 17-19.
