March 14, 2023

The Humanities Council’s 2022-23 Old Dominion Lecture series concluded on Tuesday February 28, with a lecture from Stephen F. Teiser (Religion).

The talk, titled “The Buddhist Wheel of Rebirth: Painting and Performance, Then and Now,” explored the ways that people talk about rebirth, and interrogated various representations of the wheel as performance and in practice.

Teiser is the D. T. Suzuki Professor in Buddhist Studies and professor of religion. His research interests include the transformation of Buddhism in Asia, and his scholarship traces the interaction between cultures along the Silk Road using textual, artistic, and material remains. As an Old Dominion Research Professor in 2022-23, Teiser is developing his book “Curing with Karma: Healing Liturgies in Chinese Buddhism.”

Old Dominion Research Professors are senior faculty of tenured rank who engage the campus community in sustained discussions around their research, and contribute to the Council’s programs and events. The yearlong program is designed to support additional research time for faculty and enhance the humanities community at Princeton more broadly.
