IHUM Announces 2026-27 Interdisciplinary Reading Groups

September 11, 2026

The Humanities Council’s Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in the Humanities (IHUM) will support 11 reading groups in the 2026-27 academic year. Graduate students and faculty from across the humanities and humanistic social sciences are invited to explore shared interests—from public memory to magical realism—by joining a yearlong reading group.

Convened around a wide range of multidisciplinary topics, these groups provide participants with opportunities for deeper engagement with texts and each other. Graduate students from a dozen departments and programs – including Spanish and Portuguese, history of science, art and archaeology, anthropology, and religion – have initiated groups for the current academic year.

This year’s IHUM reading groups are:

  • Air Power: Theories and Histories
  • Asian American Studies
  • Converging and Diverging: Recalibrating the Photographic
  • Critical Archival Studies: Theory and Practice
  • Embodied Encounters: Experiences of Illness, Healing, Personhood
  • Erotics and Intimacies
  • Proseminar in Obedience Studies
  • Public Memory: Performance and Reenactment
  • Science and Technology Studies: Knowledge and Power
  • Space and Literature: Perspectives from Latin America
  • The Many Lives of Magical Realism

Interested students should contact the organizers to register. Details about meetings and membership are available on each group’s page.
